The mattress in a sofa bed usually made up of the seat and back cushions of the sofa. When unfolded into, the sofa bed mattress is the underside of the cushions used to sit on. This makes for a comfortable sleeping area, and also cosy seating. The mattress is often of high quality, as it has to be used in the day for seating and in the night for sleeping.

There is, however, a growing market in Japan for high quality bedding made in the Western style. While still not traditional sofa beds, they lack the springs and synthetic casings of Western mattresses and tend to be constructed primarily out of cotton. Additionally, these alternative sofabeds tend to be hand-made. Quite often these bed sofas are marketed as "earth friendly," especially since they do not contain the chemicals with which some conventional bedding is manufactured.
